You’re Allowed to Want More: Sabra Meretab on High Achievement, Hidden Exhaustion, and the Healing Power of Story
A conversation about the gap between the person you become good at being and the person you actually are.
ListenMedia kit
A small media kit for a big, complicated subject.
Sabra Meretab is a writer, speaker, and former Silicon Valley engineering leader exploring what happens when ambition works a little too well. Her work sits at the intersection of achievement, self-doubt, burnout, identity, career reinvention, and the search for a life that feels meaningful.
Interview angles
We talk constantly about imposter syndrome: the fear that you’re not as capable as everyone thinks you are. Sabra also explores its less-discussed cousin—hero syndrome—the fear that once you’ve established yourself as exceptional, you now have to keep proving it.
Why self-doubt doesn’t always make people shrink. Sometimes it makes them extraordinarily successful—and creates a fuel source that can be very difficult to turn off.
What happens when your career is objectively going well, but you increasingly find yourself asking: what is all this succeeding actually for?
Burnout is often treated as the problem itself. Sabra explores what happens when burnout is actually a symptom of something deeper—insecurity, identity, fear, or a life built around proving rather than wanting.
Career reinvention is particularly complicated when the thing you’re considering leaving is something you’re already very good at. Sabra explores why high achievers may find it harder—not easier—to change direction once they’ve accumulated prestige, momentum, and an identity built around achievement.

Sabra Meretab is a writer, speaker, and former Silicon Valley engineering leader whose work explores ambition, self-doubt, burnout, and the search for a life that feels meaningful. A Stanford graduate, she spent nearly a decade in technology, working at Visa before joining Stripe, where she rose through product and technical leadership roles to become one of the company's youngest engineering leaders during its hypergrowth years.
From the outside, the trajectory looked remarkably successful. Inwardly, it was more complicated—burnout, migraines, and a persistent sense that no amount of achievement ever quite felt like enough. Rather than walking away overnight, she began to investigate the questions she had spent years outrunning: what happens when success stops feeling like fulfillment, when burnout is a symptom of something deeper, and when the hardest path to leave is the one you are already good at—a fear she calls hero syndrome.
Those questions became her writing and speaking, and the foundation of her forthcoming memoir, Insecure Overachiever, publishing February 23, 2027 from Girl Friday Productions.
